VISION:

To make the Kurth Memorial Library the best library of its size in the country.

   FOREWORD

The following presentation is a collaborative effort of members of the Friends of Kurth Memorial Library in consultation with Roberta Pitts, former library director of Texas A&M Koriyama, Japan and Texas A&M Kingsville, Texas.

It is offered in the spirit of a community working together to achieve a common goal for our library – to make it the best library of its size in the country.

It is offered in the spirit of extending a hand of opportunity for all library supporters to make a strong commitment to achieving and maintaining excellence in our library.

It is offered in the spirit of causing the circle of supporters to grow larger to make room for whomsoever will may step in and enjoy the benefits of this repository of knowledge.

It is offered in the spirit of gratitude for library supporters past and present who have given of their resources and of themselves to maintain the presence of viable libraries in communities all over the nation.

This plan is about commitment and about periodically standing on the summit to  review our labors with pride and a sense of accomplishment and being able to say, “It is good.”
INTRODUCTION

In April, 2005 Dr. W. D. And Sarah Jane Thames moved to Pinecrest Retirement Center after their home of many years was taken by the State of Texas for a road right-of-way.  It was necessary for them to downsize their belongings due to space limitations at Pinecrest.  Their substantial library was a victim of this downsizing.  They are founding members of the Friends of the Library and Dr. Thames is a past president.

They donated the remainder of the library to the friends of Kurth Memorial Library.  This donation consists of approximately 5,000 hardback books and 1,200 paperback books on an astounding range of subjects.  Many of the books are rare and valuable.  All are in good condition.

A unique opportunity has been graciously and generously presented to the community to enhance or complete collections of various subjects, authors, works of art, historical, non-fiction subjects and place them on the shelves of our library at minimal cost.

Annually, the friends of the library receive similar donations to a much lesser degree that could be used in the same manner.

The following plan is very simple in nature and is one, if adopted and implemented could greatly enhance the quality of our library at a minimal cost.  With this in mind it must be noted that all donations to the friends of the library are, in actuality, the property of Kurth Memorial Library.  The friends act as trustees whose mission is to spread the joy of reading by offering affordable used books at our sales and to raise money to maintain and enrich the quality of our library.
