B. Acceptance of Gifts

1.   Receipt of gifts must be accompanied by the donor’s signature on the Donor Release Statement.

2.   The Library accepts gifts of books and other materials with the understanding that they will be added to the collection only if appropriate and needed.  If they are not needed because of duplication, condition, or dated information, the Director can dispose of them as he/she sees fit.  Disposition of gift materials, if necessary, will be made in accordance with Library policies and procedures.  Disposition may include donating materials to Friends of the Library or recycling.

3.   Memorial gifts of books or money are also accepted with suitable bookplates placed in the book.  Specific memorial books can be ordered if the request meets the criteria established by the Board.  If no specific book is requested, book selection will be make by the Director.

4.   The same criteria of selection which are applied to purchased materials are applied to gifts.  Materials that do not comply with the Library’s Collection Development Policy may not be added to the collection.

5.   Gifts of money, real property, and/or stock will be accepted if conditions attached thereto are acceptable to the Board and the City.

6.   Personal property, art objects, portraits, antiques, and other museum objects will be accepted if conditions attached thereto are acceptable to the Board and the City.

7.   The library will not accept deposit materials, which are not outright gifts.

C. Charitable Deduction

Gifts may qualify for a charitable deduction for federal income tax purposes under Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code; however, the Library accepts no responsibility for establishing or verifying the value of donated items for that purpose and the Library cannot determine actual deductibility.  Donors are referred to their tax consultant for any questions regarding deductibility.
